Kenya has been aiming to transition to 100% clean or renewable energy by 2030. The bulk of it will come from geothermal sources, that’s heat energy generated from beneath the earth’s surface, TRT Africa reports.
The country hopes, the rest could be filled out by hydropower, wind turbines thermal sources and solar panels. And now with just less than 7 years remaining.
“We should be green. So that means we will actually have retired Some of the gas that are owned by independent republic business. we the government is also planning to upgrade the power transmission systems”, Government Representative
In geothermal production, capacity generating around 950 megawatts, which can potentially power 4 million homes.
” We’re just about to get to 1,000 m. So we still have a huge potential in this country and the government is actually very keen. This is the first African country in the continent to harness heat generated within the Earth that was in 1981. When it began the construction of the largest geothermal power plant in Great Rift Valley,” Government Representative.
According to the government representative Riftvalley produces over 50% of the power energy in Kenya.
“The potential has always been recognized but the initial costs of funding the power source seem to high well,It costs, 3 million US dollars. To install 1 megawatt of power. 3 million US dollars. 1 wealth cost, 6 million US dollars. So, if we can, Reduce the number of warts ,That are connected to this plant, By even 30%. You have made a saving of more than 100”,He said.
East African countries produce very little of the greenhouse gases that contribute to the climate change. They suffered this proportionately from its effects, compared with the world’s big economies that produce most of the greenhouse gases therefore using renewable energy has become a priority.
‘We have to manage climate Greenhouse gases. So the green energy campaign is to address that specifically deduction. Or global warming gas,we deployed our human resource to be able to assist them in the drilling the wells in those countries because again, they are also located along the African Region and we have to support them by providing staff with the drilling experience,”He said.
To also be able to export this green source of energy besides Ethiopia and Djibouti geothermal energy linked to the east African Rift system. Also goes through Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda with the potentials for Utilizing them properly is key in managing climate change in the continent and Beyond.
